Joshua Carlson attended the University of Massachusetts and received a B.A. in mechanical engineering as well as a minor in business administration. He went on to receive a master’s degree in physical oceanography from the School for Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Joshua has a diverse and varied background, ranging from using autonomous underwater vehicles to study Kelvin-Helmholtz billows and their associated ocean turbulence to designing and operating 6,000 meter rated remotely operated vehicles. Joshua also has experience designing mechanical and hydraulic systems for deep sea vehicles and camera platforms to observed deep ocean krill. Joshua is a computer programmer and has also worked to modify, improve and debug vehicle control software and user interfaces used in operating deep sea vehicles. He current interests include embedded systems, computer vision, and machine learning algorithms.
Joshua is currently providing mechanical design, software development, and at-sea support for NOAA’s remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer (D2). Joshua’s wide range of skills in engineering, computer programming, and vehicle operations and his continuous drive to learn and develop new skills has made him an invaluable member of our team. Joshua resides in Providence, Rhode Island.
