Dr. Hans Van Tilburg holds a BA in geography from University of California Berkeley, an MA in maritime archaeology/history from East Carolina University, and a PhD in history from the University of Hawai`i, where he ran the graduate program in maritime archaeology and history. He has taught courses in world maritime history and published over 30 articles and book reviews, as well as several books. He has served as a consultant for UNESCO’s cultural heritage program and co-instructor for UNESCO’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Foundation courses worldwide. Hans is currently the maritime heritage coordinator for NOAA’s Pacific Islands region (Principal Investigator for over 30 survey projects) and a unit diving supervisor for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
